Just a notion, or really more of a question than a notion - I'm wondering if there's been much thought given to protecting the 2nd Amendment not by emphasizing private ownership of handheld weapons, but in decentralizing the military itself. If the spirit of the amendment is to keep the power to destroy the government in the hands of the citizens themselves, then it seems like protecting individual gun ownership rights doesn't quite cut it.
But what would it look like for the military to be broken up into militias and distributed back to the citizenry? Is it even possible for a major nation to not have a standing regular army?
